For this edition of Untitled Art, Houston, 1301PE will debut a solo presentation of Australian artist, Jonny Niesche.
Working across an expanded field of painting, sculpture and installation, Niesche’s evocatively colored works intrigue and stimulate the viewer's sensory perception. The seductive surfaces of Niesche’s paintings hum and shimmer with color that hovers just above the surface.
Niesche has long worked with the relationship of color, form and material to produce formally and optically charged works. He simultaneously pushes color to the threshold of saturation and draws the viewer into immersive depths of color, where chromatic fields seem to open into pools of perception. These artworks embody a visual lineage connecting to historic, mid-century icons, Mark Rothko and James Turrell, both particularly resonant in Houston for the Rothko Chapel and Turrell’s skyspace.
