JUDY LEDGERWOOD: SUNNY DAYS

1301PE is pleased to announce a one-person exhibition of Chicago based artist Judy Ledgerwood. The exhibition will present four paintings inspired by the light, temperature and atmosphere specific to Los Angeles in spring.

Ledgerwood has been exploring ideas of light, weather and mood and the relationship between them in her painting for more than ten years. However, in Cold Days, an exhibition for the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago in January 1999, her vocabulary was precise. The resulting Cold Days paintings were monochromatic. These exquisitely luminous all white canvasses in a white space were to be encountered after trudging through the snow in Chicago. The experience was sublime.

Those primarily white site-specific paintings provided Ledgerwood a starting point for this exhibition. In the new works, she explores the melancholia that lies behind the sun. While the Cold Days painting were monochromatic, in the new works Ledgerwood uses a more complex tonal range as a challenge to describe the fleeting moment of Los Angeles in spring.

Judy Ledgerwood studied at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and The Art Academy of Cincinnati. She lives and works in Chicago.
